Will County Illinois Inmate Claims Guard Stood By, Did Nothing, Then Deputies Covered Up Gang RapeJOLIET, ILLINOIS- A young man accused a Will County deputy of standing by while two inmates raped him in the county jail and alleged that officers conspired to cover up the attack.A petition filed Tuesday charged that a guard nicknamed “Snowball” allowed the attack and said two deputies “coerced and threatened” the man into falsely denying the rape during a videotaped statement. The man, 22-year-old NAME DELETED, was locked up Jan. 19 on seven charges of felony criminal damage to property in connection with an alleged car vandalism spree. A few days into his stay, according to court papers, inmates sexually assaulted him while a guard looked on.According to the petition, officers transported the victim to Silver Cross Hospital while his mother waited for him in the jail lobby. At the hospital, staff found evidence of sexual assault on the victim, said his attorney, John Schrock.Days later, his mother said, detectives questioned her son about the attack and told him to deny it on videotape.“He was told if he did not do this, they would keep him until he did,” she said.Gerald Haberkorn, a Chicago attorney who represents the county in civil matters, said he was reviewing the petition Wednesday. Haberkorn said the sheriff’s department denies the allegations.
