Taking Word to the limits
« on: June 27, 2022, 08:43:33 PM »
I'm in another bout of procrastinating and a minor writer's block featuring a chapter I just got to in Pharma.  The story is very long so far.  How long?  About 205k words, spread over two docx files.  And there's a reason I had to split into another file last night.

For the last few nights, I've been frustrated while writing.  Each and every time I'd sit down to write, MS Word was severely laggy.  Not "a little slow" laggy, but "I typed two sentences and they aren't on the screen yet" laggy.  This aggravated me to no end.  I tried a couple different programs, rebooted a couple times, even contemplated upgrading to a new version.  Just to troubleshoot, I opened a new file and started work there.  It worked the way it's supposed to.  That's when it hit me.  I'm over 400 pages deep in this story and over 200k words.  Whatever's going on, it's because the file is so big that Word can't handle it.

I broke MS Word by making porn.

If anyone has suggestions for other word processing programs they use, I'd like to hear them.  I use Word only because I already had a copy.

Also, I'm in the deep part of the attack in the Pharma story.  Just to keep track of everything, I made a spreadsheet for vital characteristics.  I've never kept track of pubic hair like this in my life.
Always close the program you were running before exiting the holodeck

Right now, there are two good and free options I know.
yWriter and Manuskript.
yWriter is pretty good and fast, and has a nice interface.
Manuskript is good too, but a little slower. Won't lock up as long as you don't go fullscreen in a slow PC. I use Manuskript right now.
Characters in yWriter don't have so many details. Manuskript has more details for characters, and allows you to display characteristics while writing.
