Cover to Cover
« on: April 29, 2021, 09:17:40 PM »
Graham and I began this in the games forum a while back. I decided it might be more appropriate to move it here to the music forum. Here is how it goes. You find a song from one artist that has been covered by another artist and you post the original along with the cover. OR you can post two covers of the same song by different artists. The first one I'm going to post is originally from 1986. Battleship Chains by Georgia Satellites, then a cover done by Danish metal band Volbeat.

The original:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwspPeO1O1g

Volbeat's cover:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm88BllvcsU

Only fair that I reply here since I so enjoyed playing Vile8r in the game section on this one!

Have to say this one of the few times when I feel the cover is better than the original!

I've always loved Kylie's version of The Locomotion! But then I've always had a soft spot for that Aussie cutie!  ;D

Thank you Graham.

The Marvelettes - Please Mr. Postman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=425GpjTSlS4

This has been covered lots of times, maybe most famously by The Beatles and by The Carpenters. Here's The Carpenter's version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcLbS0yxzdk

Here's a more modern one which is technically not a cover, because it just uses the melody, not the lyrics:
Portugal: The Man - Feel it Still:

For me The Carpenters's version had more energy so it tops the Marvelette's version. Did consider Portugal The Man's use of the music very creative!

Well Emma's video is sexier, lol, but I like Petula's version better.

Great idea Vile8r and I’ll merit as soon as possible for it and I remember seeing the game before

Of course I’ll start with Elvis who’s been covered so many times. And

Always On My Mind
https://youtu.be/u9sRJ-eOHnc

The Willie Nelson version which I’ve only heard a a few times. Not bad a bit more melody to it.

https://youtu.be/R7f189Z0v0Y

And the Famous Upbeat Poppy Pet Shop Boys

Always on my mind is one of those weird covers, because all three of those versions are huge in their own right. It's impossible to choose a favorite. They all bring something unique and great to it. If I recall correctly, Elvis wasn't the original artist either.

My contribution is two covers by Disturbed, both, I think, outshine the original.
Genesis - Land of Confusion

Disturbed - Land of Confusion

&

Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence

As grumpy stated each version of "Always On My Mind" are unique in their own right. Too bad toy didn't post B.J. Thomas's original 1970 version  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vpD_NqACYs

I don't know why but Disturbed's version of both some had a menacing feel to the way the lyrics are sang! Definitely prefer Disturbed better than the original!

So here is another one where the cover is a profound as the original

Nine Inch Nail- Hurt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvoTktdpIiI

Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash version of Hurt is stellar, he knew he was coming to an end then.

Now one of my favorites of all time
Eternal Flame by The Bangles.
I was actually surprised it was written by them, as it sounds like it could be a cover

https://youtu.be/PSoOFn3wQV4

Then this.......cover by Atomic Kitten.
No one I knew liked this. It was only 12 years after the original and really a case of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it and don’t butcher the Bangles!!

I have to agree there was no reason to cover The Bangles outside of getting a hit from millennials who don't know the original!

Westlife did that quite a few times, with Mandy, Uptown Girl, and Total Eclipse of the Heart, off the top of my head.

Speaking of Total Eclipse of the Heart...

Absolutely love the original and I quickly falling for Hurra Torpedo's version. Nikki French must be shot for that criminal act

As good A Celine Dion Is, Meatloaf made his version more theatrical!
