Theme Music
« on: March 10, 2021, 09:33:00 AM »
So in this post basically, I’m going to upload the themes, soundtracks I’ve taken a fancy to over the years and invite others to do the same.

I’ll be going from famous movies, box sets , and obscure British tv shows and I’ll be explaining what they mean to me.

So as I said add to this and again, movies, tv shows, video games, even commercials
Have a bit of fun.

And I’ll go first for my love of fantasy movies and their themes and soundtracks. I must thank my sister for these as she introduced them to me when I was little but needless to say I love those films and with one the theme song more. I’ve already shared Never Ending story but here’s the extended version.

So it’s that, Willow, and Labyrinth with the amazing and beautiful David Bowie.

Theme to Willow. James Horner
https://youtu.be/9H6yUZLQfes

Loved this movie by George Lucas. Had amazing effects for the time and loved the evil Queen theme in it. Also before Val Kilmer became the known asshole he is today.
The theme is very like John Williams sound and very swashbuckling taking us right to the heart of fast paced 80s fantasy!

Next is the Never Ending Story. A movie that means a lot to me for total rainy day
, cheese on toast Saturday’s in Britain. Love the theme more than the movie as some have pointed out it was trippy and wasn’t it just!

The extended theme by Lamhl.
https://youtu.be/XvbkMpssrjU

Finally the Labyrinth. I first saw this when I was 7 at Christmas time and it just is etched into my mind of happiness and wonderful memories from a simpler time.
David Bowie was awesome and I think this is what made me fall in love with him and his work.
Looking back this movie is darker than it should be. The underage implied romance, the baby danger theme and kind fluffy animal torture, but it is truly one of this lady’s masterpieces of life.
And this is my song from it.

Romantic, confusing, bittersweet.
It’s David Bowie and “Within You”

https://youtu.be/RsWogtvif1o

Enjoy and hope to hear of your soundtracks etc that you like
Jessica xx

Absolutely love David Bowie. To me that role was his from the moment Hensen wrote it.
Willow never enjoy success when it first came out but now it has cult status.
Will hurt you for "The NeverEnding Story"- gawd how that song annoyed me!

But to this nerd when your talking iconic themes from the UK only one comes to mind instantly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNszKKAtEwU

Bet only our British members would have seen or heard these themes but this Canadian had two hours on Saturday afternoon to hear them and the music they played weekly!

Themes are so damn good. Not only are they awesome pieces of music by themselves, but they often bring back a vivid memory of what you saw when you first heard it.

Cool choices. I think more people have heard Never Ending Story than have seen it at this point :) I have not actually seen any of these, but I've heard all the songs. I don't know what that says about me.

My tastes are usually a bit more melancholic, I suppose.

One of my all time favorites is Comptine d'un autre été, l'après-midi by Yann Tiersen. Theme for the movie Amélie: https://youtu.be/oOUkIdOnEPM

I know I enjoyed the movie, but I can't for the life of me remember more than a couple of scenes. The theme music is stuck in my brain for life, though. It's just so iconic and sets the tone of the movie like no other.

I could literally list my favorite themes for days. Hans Zimmer's whole catalogue, for starters, but one that's a bit different is the theme from Hackers: Orbital - Halcyon On and On: https://youtu.be/bV-hSgL1R74

Hackers is such a cheesy cringe-fest of a movie, but it's got a special place in my nerd heart for how cool it was.

Now for a couple of mine:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL-HvfVwZKM
Yes Jessica, going back to my 'rocker' days again! This song was not technically the theme song of the Heavy Metal movie, but was part of the soundtrack. The opening riff was just so cool right from the first time I heard it, and it was done by a person who I never considered as a "heavy metal' kind of guitarist, Don Felder, formerly of the Eagles. But is a song that always takes me back to the summer of 1981.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrsIX-OajaY
and who can ever forget the theme to Sesame Street? Brings back so many childhood memories of summer vacations, you didn't have to go to school and every weekday morning you dropped what you were doing to come watch Sesame Street!

and some comments :

Jess -  I will agree with you on Neverending Story. Brings back some special memories of watching it with a special girl on a warm summer evening in June 1985,

Graham - I NEVER knew Spiderman cartoon was a Canadian production! I never missed that show on a Saturday afternoon.

Oh wow! H.R. Pufnstuf! There's a walk down memory lane. Used to watch that all the time. I will overlook The Littlest Hobo, LOL, as all the others were pretty good.  Loved hearing the HNIC theme. Also brings back a lot of memories. I still expect to hear that music come on when a hockey game starts on TV but alas, it never does. Also always loved hearing Dick Irvin or Dave Hodge or Harry Neale.  "Welcome to Maple Leaf Gardens, where tonight the Maple Leafs will take on Bobby Orr and the Boston Bruins!"

Time to spread some knowledge with both sides of the pond. A popular concept is to take existing shows and change them to suit the new Market. So today Popular British show redone for American Audiences

Man About The House/ Robin Nest's
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQRgBYsmAMQ

American redo as Three's Company/ Three's A Crowd
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPgutG4Vw7M
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEkh_74JThQ

Steptoe And Son
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRaiiT3ZnJw

American Sandford And Son
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5DnqW3F57E

Til Death Do Us Part
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pisrxi-1Idc (After commercial for Aston Rover)

American classic All In The Family
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fye4uY3pCvo

(interesting note Jean Stapleton who played Edith Bunker was an accomplished Broadway singer who decided to sing in the style of her character. Produces first heard the song played in a pilot episode and asked Jean to play up the theme  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jw_G3o1pGlY )

Some great stuff there Graham!  One thing I notice about the British soaps, all their theme music sounded the same! lol. Was cool seeing the videos for the American soaps and how the characters have transformed over the years!

I knew Three's Company was based on a British sitcom, but never knew that Sanford & Son was too. Learned something new!

Theme music from three iconic Sci-fi franchises.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXDnFYu91vY

Who can forget, the first time you saw Star Wars, and the opening music? I can watch this still over 40 years later and it still gives me goosebumps every time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWSp5ijOOfk

And of course the famous intro for Star Trek. Captain Kirk and his classic line...."to boldly go where no man has gone before!"  (who knows? With Capt. Kirk, he may have been talking about inside Lt. Uhura's panties!  :emot_rotf.gif:)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E23Pg6XuPgo

The theme from the first Alien! More movie music that really gives me shivers down the spine every time I hear it.

Been Staying away from Sci-fi themes so as to not cause a debate about which is better. The original Star Trek theme had me running to the TV back in the early seventies!. Star Wars theme never did anything for me outside of theaters. never really noticed that Alien had a theme before, will have to shut up about "It'll come through your chest like a plant through the soil!"

Merit will be warded when possible!

Some wonderful stuff.

Grumpy I love Hans Zimmer, and we’ll be seeing more of him I’m sure in this thread

Vile8r, I’m not a big sci fi fan but I do love the theme to Star Wars and Alien was a superb soundtrack to a scary film. One that still gives me goosebumps.
Star Trek is iconic!

You can’t get much more British than Dr Who. Great show but latest are rubbish.
Steptoe and Son was a funny tune still played today on so many skits

Loved the Canadian stuff, and I can only relate to the Raccoons lol as that was my favorite cartoon and loved the soundtrack to that.

So going into my childhood,(behave Graham you’ve soiled enough memories, lol). These were my favorite shows, excluding the Raccoons as I’ve done that already. Very British and some American series in there too for giggles.

Thomas the Tank Engine, I used to cry when Thomas crashed lol.

https://youtu.be/GnrwM7vFn_U

Of course The Turtles,

https://youtu.be/bojx9BDpJks

Then there was this forgotten gem which I loved at the time and was ahead of it’s time.
Captain Planet

https://youtu.be/ZGegECwSiGY

This was a very English show and really weird looking back. Count Duckula

https://youtu.be/hifgIM0_OXw

Then there was the one and only Famous Five
It was old when I saw it but it was so good for the time.

https://youtu.be/Z3zjoN6-ddQ

And of course my favorite show growing up

Grange Hill

https://youtu.be/AN54eBj9i7k

Enjoy xxx

Oh Jessica I tried so damn hard but when I read that i was to behave, well I lost it, if hearing the theme of Thomas made you cry when what did you do when Thomas came? :emot_rotf.gif: :emot_rotf.gif: :emot_rotf.gif:

Was a huge TMNT" fan the show got me so hooked that I went out and bought the original black and white comic and the Archie version at the same time. never cared for "Captain Planet"- too preachy for my taste!

Never got into "Count Duckula" but Tammy and my sister Glenda religiously watched it every Sunday night. Don't hold me to this but I believe that both own the entire run on Both VHS and DVD

Didn't know the "Famous Five" was made into a show, myself I was more into the "Secret Seven"

Course I have heard of "Grange Hill" but thanks to being in Canada the videos were at first blocked to us. now that they are available to view I'll have to try the show!

Overall I love what you have presented, it gives us a background into your life before getting corrupted talking with Us! Merit awarded!
