The June story contest nomination thread
« on: June 24, 2018, 03:03:03 PM »
Alright, it sounds like there is support for a new way of doing things, and no one has expressed support for the status quo, so here we go.

Starting now, in responses to this thread, I'll accept nominations for best story. All categories are eligible as before. To be permitted into the contest,

  • The story must have new content posted during the month covered (June in this case). The stories no longer have to start during the month.
  • Each poster gets to nominate three stories.
  • Any poster that has contributed to an eligible story during the month gets an extra nomination of his/her choice, for a total of four. It's a reward for contributing.
  • In your reply, please have a big bold-faced line like These are my nominations so I can find them quickly later.
  • You can change your nomination list up to the end of the nomination period. Just edit your post here. I won't tally anything until the close of the nomination period.

And since we want to have all June entries covered, and some have yet to be posted since June has six days left, the nominations will end sometime around July 7. At that point, the two week contest will begin.

I will select the top ten nomination getters as the entries for the contest. Hopefully there will be at least ten nominations. Then the contest will be for gold, silver, and bronze for the top three. Ties are permitted.

The Rookie author award will continue as normal. No need for nominations, all newbies are entered automatically.

If I think of anything more, I'll edit this post.

Begin.

Remember, the Rookie Author awards continue as normal. All of them get their shot. No nominations needed.

So I've only got one nomination so far because I'm very picky when it comes to stories. I'll update this post if I find others from this month that I think are of impeccable quality, well-written, and command my attention. Also, thanks for the nom carhamgrater! I appreciate it!

Nomination #1: "A Sad Tale of Four Sisters" by SoftGameHunter
An extremely well-written story that features and excellent use of descriptive-language that conjures horrible and bleak imagery. Reminds me personally of my own story featuring a girl kept in isolation, and how powerful a theme that can be when done well - and it is done very well here. The last paragraph alone is among the best, even when out of the context of the story, I've read on this site and makes me want to read on. Good job on this one, and I hope you continue with it. There's a lot of potential here, and just as a personal note, I would love to see more hints to the other sister's fates as well. Maybe finding something in that room that belonged to them, perhaps? Or overhearing the men talk about them and the effect on her mental state hearing it.

Nomination #2: "Locust Run" by Darklord
I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but this one is certainly an exception to that. The set-up was excellent, concise enough to be effective, and it made for an even better read. I would've loved for this to have been a longer work, and there's even a lot of potential for more given the ending. The ending, speaking of, is why I nominated this. I didn't honestly see it coming and ending with a simple but effective single line that left a lot to the reader's imagination.

Nomination #3: TBA

The awards are for entire stories, or at least as much as is published. I couldn't require people to only vote for segments done in June, since I'd have no way to enforce it anyway. There just has to be new content during the month.

The month ends in about forty minutes, but the nominations will stay open for a week or so. I believe that's what I said earlier. If you already made nominations and changed your mind, just modify your post. Remember, we're trying to get a good sampling of stories to vote for. Anyone can nominate three, and authors who contributed this month to at least one story get four.

A reminder, just in case, everyone gets to make three nominations, or four if you've published story material during June. I'm not picking on Groucho and Sander if they only want to nominate one, but you can do more if you like.

I somewhat agree, but I will say that if you're not going to end up nominating anything else, why not just include them for the simple sake that it is a nice compliment to those authors to see more people nominate their works. I take it as a huge compliment, and I'm sure a lot of others do too. Just my two cents. ::):

Ok you got a Point, but i think it is harder for Softgamehunter to select the nominated stories if they aren´t listed several times :-) Guess we should start the Voting, seems there aren´t any more nominations
