Rules question
« on: October 02, 2017, 06:04:43 PM »
By the way my intention was to post this question on the post with the rules but that post is locked.  Depending on the viewpoint of this question this post can be removed and the rule added to the rules if felt valid.

I did not see a rule regarding crediting the Author who wrote the story.

I might be incorrect, but I want to verify should a story eligible for voting be the original writing of the author posting it?

If not then at a minimum should'nt the original writer be credited as the author?

There are stories being placed here from other sites, I know this because people have admitted doing so.  For that matter a couple of my own stories were originally posted on other story sites but I have edited and even modified them to improve them.

What I want to clarify is, is there a rule that if posting a story it MUST either the posters original work?
If not at a minimum it should be credited as another authors work.

Clarification about this would be appreciated.

I for one am not a fan of plagiarism.
Just a moment to post a reply to an authors story makes it worth the hours of writing and editing the story.

I can not state what is in the rules, but my gut feeling is that yes, the story should be an original work of a registered member.   I suppose if the submitter credited the original author and that author consented to allow it here that might be one thing.  Maybe SGH would have some input on it.

I think the author should be the actual author. It seems fair. That said, I haven't always read the stories before I list them, and I'm generally just grabbing and going in a big marathon posting session. This month, for instance, I was compiling over ninety of them at once. It takes over an hour to collect, tabulate, and insert that many into a poll, and then parse out the stories eligible for the Rookie Author award. So in general, I'm C&P-ing blindly.

Shall I assume one or more stories this month is someone else's? If they're labeled as such, please just point them out and I shall adjust the poll. If they're not labeled, let me know how to confirm authorship.

That said again, I wouldn't worry too much. There's nothing more at stake than some kudos.

As for porting your own stories from other sites, I see nothing wrong with that at all. As the author, you have total rights to re-use them as you like. For instance, though I consider RU to be my home site, I do post a unique story on another site for a contest there, and then re-post it here two months later once that contest has gone through, at which point it becomes eligible for our own contest. This month has a lot of reposts in the selection, but they're all new here (as far as I know) so I see no problem.

And finally, and I think this has been mentioned, any board member can request that their story not be included for any reason or no reason at all. No one's done this, but it's fine.

I'm not a fan of posting other's work even when giving credit.  The original author may not want their story copied and moved.  I know I would only want my writing to be posted by me.

I actually happened apon this site because Lois copied one of my stories.  However, she posted it as:

[Anti-rape by Psiberzerker]  Says it right there on the tin.  This happened years ago, so I don't believe there even was a monthly Story Contest at the time.  However, it would make SGH's job a lot easier, and be more respectful to the original author (When you know who it is, a lot of stories get reposted anonymously) to put it in the Title with a byline.

Another question, while I'm here:  It's the September contest, but quite a lot of the stories I posted were reposts from another site.  I suppose I could mark them as such (Though a lot of them were rewrites with original content, and excerpts of non-rape stories to make them rapier) not to mention I basically postbombed the entire site.

Which isn't fair to the other Authors.  I don't really care about winning, it's an interesting exercise, but I'm sure one of the authors I'm essentially running a Denial of Service attack on don't appreciate it either.  So, I would be willing to work with someone (If SGH is busy) to pare down the list.  Or, I could just amend a list of submissions I don't believe are really eligible.  It's not fair, and honestly, my stories aren't really that popular.  (Just going by the hits, and utter lack of comments on them.)  I assume it's because I overthink everything, when people just want a quick, and dirty stroker.

Psiberzerker, I wouldn't worry about the volume of stories you're posting vis-a-vis the contest. I scale the number of votes according to the number of entries, so this month everyone gets to vote for up to nine, and there will be nine winners. Plus I gave the contest no advance publicity this month, so you couldn't have easily jumped in and said 'Mine don't need to be entered'. However, if you're going to continue to upload a lot of older stories and don't feel the need to have them entered in future months, by all means we can parse down the list next time. It will make my job easier! The main issue, though, is that they are all yours.

The main issue for me is that I should devote at least a second or two to scanning the title and first couple lines for any mention of a different author in future months.

There is rule, I can't state the paragraph and line, but I remember reading when re-posting other's work the original writer is to receive credit. And no plagiarism is allowed is also in the rules.

You're quite right. Rule 6 from the basic must-follow rules list is no plagiarism. That's not a contest rule, it's a board rule.

As for the contest, I can only enforce it if I know about it. So far that hasn't been an issue that I'm aware of. But in all cases, if you post something not your own, label it as such.

So, how does one go about entering this Monthly Contest?

Oh, what do you when you post a story in a slow category and regret that move? Wishing you had put in extreme rather than supernatural?

All new stories in any calendar month are automatically entered, though any author can contact me and request to be left out. (That hasn't happened yet.) I see you've recently posted some new material, so it will show up in the October contest, starting around November 1.

As for the wrong category, just ask any mod or admin and they can move a given story thread to another section. If you say which story you want moved, I can do it for you, no problem. Just answer here or PM me at your convenience.

it isn't the wrong category but apparently few read supernatural.

We aren't that picky. If you wish it moved, just ask (and provide the name, of course).
