Not enough, too much, to close to the line, what line? What is too much?

Rape, snuff, murder (as distinguished from just a snuff story), torture, piss, shit, oral, anal, humiliation. What is enough, what is too much, how is a writer to know?

Can we discuss this?

I know there is this line out there. I’m also painfully aware you’re not supposed to cross it. But what is that line, where is the line, and how do we know when we have crossed it?

When is Extreme too extreme, or is there such a thing as too extreme?

My line is death, piss, shit.  I know it is different for everyone, but that is for me.

I assume, by death, you mean snuff not just murder that is part of the story. Or am I full of shit?

I find myself very much with the same hard limits as Kylie. I think urine has still some use for humiliation but my stories are generally better without it.

In my personal opinion, the answer to the OP (Original Poster's) question is simple:

If I stand by a heavy swinging door, and a lady is approaching, my tendency is to open the door, step aside, and allow that person easier access.
Now I have "patronized", I have crossed the line.

Then that person, in fiction, grabs ahold of me, forces me to shit, piss, rape, kill, and then they snuff me.
They have NOT crossed the line, because they were motivated as "victims".

I laugh at the irony, because "victimhood" has been used to control entire groups of people for centuries.
"Victims" are pretty sure THEY get to set the lines, of what is "too much", and it changes to suit them from day to day.

Century after century, they rail at those who are standing patiently, "Holding the door for them".

I think it really depends on the individual and the site rules.   For me personally, snuff is something I am really not interested  in.  Same as child porn.  Scat is not my thing, but I do write stories that has the characters pissing, mostly due to being tied and unable to hold it anymore as a means of humiliation.    As the  extreme section seems to be rather open ended, I guess the answer lies in the write themselves.

I really think the only line that matters is the information line. Don't surprise folks with stuff that's likely to be a mood-ruiner. Those are the lines we shouldn't be crossing on a site like this. Personally, I have to be in the right mood for snuff, there's a fine line between young and too young but once crossed it doesn't come back easily, scat can sometimes work for words but basically never for actual visuals, and bestiality is just a non-starter.

But I'll never get torqued out of shape over something I freely choose to avoid.

My preferences are personal.  I've learned here there are interests of everything.  Do what you want.

My personal hard limits are Children, Scat, and Death for Death's sake. Rarely do I write a character in for the purpose of simply killing them off for no reason......

I will always ask about Hard Limits before I start to write for someone. And I will stick to those limits as does everyone else here......

It's just better that way.

If I write a story by request I write it the way they want it written, limits and all. I try to surprise them in the story, but I don't go beyond their stated limits in the story. For me, I don't have that many limits, not fond of scat or piss though I have had both in some stories. I know my stories are -- over the top -- for many people. I try o have a story and not just write jerk-off stuff, though I have at time done just that. I like writing violent stories, I grew up and lived amid violence for many years. I worried about being killed those dark days when my life was on the streets. I find it therapeutic to explore the darkest areas, those terrible things that are worse than what happened to me.

Whatever you write, someone has already written something more extreme. It probably exists in mainstream fiction, even. Crime fiction routinely depicts the most vile stuff you could imagine - blown apart bodies, abused children, people getting stabbed three dozen times, teeth being pulled out, gang rapes, snuff, arranged marriages, fgm, and the list goes on ad nauseam. I disagree that there's a limit. If there was, no one has reached it yet.

But yes, like SGH said, proper tagging is much appreciated. It's also something I should be better at.

I recently did a story, with implied death. I didn't say exactly how she died, but everybody was lead to believe she would. That was as close to that limit as I could get, without breaking it. But Millie..I have been reading your stories, long before I ever came to RU. And you are an excellent writer. I think that you draw lines in your stories and do not cross them. But if  and when you do? You make it such an integral part of the story, it just fits perfectly
