Several times in the last 24 hours, the email account that I have associated with my profile has been hacked.  Has anyone else had issues?  The address is only 4 weeks old and only used for correspondence here.  None of my other accounts were targeted. The source was an unknown device in Chicago. 

In the off chance that it might have been someone here- I commend your stalking game!  It's creepy as fuck, but definitely next level.  The mysteries of the universe are not in that account.  Consider going outside. It's a fascinating place!

No worries.  That much dedication to get into one account takes time.  So, I guess i've accepted it as the compliment that i'm sure it was intended as?  There are easier ways to get information though!  :)

I have not had a problem, but I recommend that people get a disposable email account when they sign up for forums and the like.  Mailinator works well.

How does one hack an email account? I don't know much about hacking, but I thought in this day and age running scripts and all that kind of stuff didn't get you anywhere with an email account on a big provider like Hotmail/google. You need to be able to work out the password to get in. And if your password isn't easily guess, or you haven't given it away during conversation, then they know it by other means ... and those are likely to be key loggers on your computer, or something similar.

Would recommend using complex passwords, and doing a thorough scan for viruses and Trojans. Also, never replying to things like "What's your porn star name? Combine your first pets name with your mother's maiden name, and that's your porn star name." kind of shit on facebook. They're just scams to get answers to security questions out of people.

Also stab everyone you know to death. That'll also help.

Thanks for the guidance, Hazzard!  My first thought was a keylogger.  It's not my practice to access this account from a public computer, so if a keylogger was the method of extraction it may have been local.  To that end, I am now considering your second suggestion of stabbing everyone I know.  Brilliant!  

I like my passwords like I like my men- Strong, complicated, and secure.  My IT background has me well trained on not using ADMIN or Pinkbunny11.  No worries there.  

In any case, the jackassery has ceased.  Hooray!  On to other things!

I doubt it was related to being signed up here, but some sites are less than trustworthy.    I've seen attempts on certain of my email accounts before (not lately).  Nothing that was successful - yes I work in IT too, and my passwords won't get guessed - but it is disturbing to see attempts being made.

I've been getting TONS of emails to my gmail account with viruses attached from people I've never heard of.  Fortunately gmail stops the emails and just reports that an email from blah blah was quarantined because a virus was attached.
