http://botcrawl.com/how-to-remove-the-fbi-moneypak-ransomware-virus-fake-fbi-malware-removal/

I got hit by it and knew instantly it was fake.  Beware folks!

Hopefully I got it fixed by using windows restore.  We shall see!

I was looking at this site when it happened:  http://eztv.it/  Might have clicked on a pop-up accidentally while searching for things.

So much oppression in our culture is based on shame about sex: the oppression of women, of cultural minorities, oppression in the name of the (presumably asexual) family, oppression of sexual minorities. We are all oppressed. We have all been taught, one way or another, that our desires, our bodies, our sexualities, are shameful. What better way to defeat oppression than to get together in communities and celebrate the wonders of sex?

Trend-Micro's "House Call" has given my computer a clean bill of health.  So I guess using the Windows repair option worked.

eztv is usually very safe, I've never had a warning from there, unless I've clicked a outlink

I think a popup came up right when I was clicking on something else and I ended up clicking the pop-up instead.  Or maybe I was closing the pop-up.  Either way, I wish there was a way to tell the site owners that someone is putting virus pop-ups on their site.

This should remind everyone that they should have a competent anti-virus product running at all times.  Never hurts to keep a few 'freebies' on hand also.  Update and run them periodically as a double-check.

How many of you have deleted all versions of Java below version 7.13?  Serious vulnerabilities were identified in older versions and the fix is to blow the older versions away (using add/delete programs) and to download and install from java.com the latest version.

Don't run more than 1 AntiVirus program, it can often cause conflicts.

I've had Java disabled for a long time and even the supposed fixes in v7.13 weren't good enough. Just ask BurgerKing and Jeep it was yet another 0day Java exploit that allowed their twitter feed to be hacked.

If you think you can't live without Java then maybe a Firefox Add-on "QuickJava" is what you need. It allows quick enable and disable of Java

I have not run an anti virus at all since mine expired.  I run "House-Call" occasionally to check for infections.  Nothing yet and we are going on over a year.

I've seen this Lois! It was regionalised, so I saw a British police version. It freaked me out at first, but as soon as it asked for money to unlock my computer I knew it was fake. Plus I wasn't doing anything illegal (I keep all the kiddy porn, snuff, terrorist plans and chemical weapon construction instructions on another computer), so I wasn't bothered. Just for a second it had me though!

Can't remember how I got rid of it, but I think it wrote itself into the start-up programs and I disabled and deleted it using msconfig.exe

I used the ctrl/alt/delete thing to bring up task manager, used that to close browser and scanned after it came up clean with both comodo and mbam. I did nothing else other then that, did not click on anything in the webpage as I knew it was bullshit.

Ditto that. Kill the task, scan the disk, rest easy. The FBI is WAY too busy with "terrorists" to bother with the likes of us. anyway.

Ive had that before, The easy fix for me was just creating another user account on the computer that seemed to clear it up. I guess it is tied to the start up of the user account you were on when it happened.

Can't say I've ever run into this one in particular, but I have run into a few fake pages that claim to be virus scanners, and that also claim I have a virus on my computer. The end run of these pages is usually to scam you out of money and/or to deliver some sort of malware or spyware to your machine via your browser. In the case of the fake FBI popup, its about exploiting money, or so I've read.

There are now some variations that do actually allow the hackers to encrypt files and will only give the key to unlock after payment.
They are usually targeted at businesses but as they become more readily available on the sites to purchase others will start to deploy them more indiscriminately, and will also be much less likely to forward the encryption key.
The best defense against them is a very common 1, and have multiple partitions. From the dissections I've read they only target :C drive, so if you only have the OS on that drive and everything else on a different partition the worst case is a reinstall of the OS, but no loss of data except anything unsaved
