Title: "I have to text my rapist." Victims forced to parent with their attackers.

CNN Reporting Nov. 17, 2016

http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/17/health/rape-parental-rights/

Trapped in a bad dream.

That's how 18-year-old Noemi felt when she learned that she had no choice but to hand over her baby daughter to the man convicted of sexually assaulting her.

Noemi's child was conceived in the sexual assault, and Nebraska's laws on parental rights forced her to agree to court-sanctioned visits between her daughter and her attacker.

For Noemi, who asked CNN to protect her privacy by not using her last name, it amounts to putting the most cherished part of her life in harm's way.
Her biggest fear is that her child will "get hurt or something bad will happen to her," Noemi told CNN's Lisa Ling. "I can't tell what he will do to my daughter."
Noemi's story isn't unusual. Across America, there are state laws that don't protect women who became pregnant through rape from being forced to share their children with their rapists. It's a common problem. Exact stats aren't tracked, but there are an estimated 17,000 to 32,000 rape-related pregnancies in the United States each year, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. About 32% to 50% of impregnated rape victims keep their babies, according to various studies.

Those estimates would put between 5,000 and 16,000 women at risk of falling into this legal limbo every year, depending on where they live and where the attack took place.

It seems pregnancy during rape is a very real and scary possibility. Although I doubt most rapists would want to have contact with their victims.

The US of A is a seriously fucked up country in very many ways.
Halleluja and bless the lord.

As of late, more fucked up than blessed. What happens to women if Trump and his Republican brethren have their way with Roe vs. Wade?

This is seriously disturbing that all 50 states do not have laws protecting the victim.  To have to allow your child to have a visit with the rapist that conceived them is like being forced to allow a car thief to drive your car once a month once it is returned to you.  It is a shame that common sense does not coexist with many laws.

Great analogy.

That's a truly fucked up story.

Is this asshole being forced to pay child support at least?

If Roe v Wade is overturned then the issue/regulation of abortion will be turned over to the states.  The effect will be that abortion will be made illegal in many states, and it will still be legal in others.  So, if a woman was in Texas and she wanted/needed to terminate a pregnancy, she'd have to travel to California, New York, Maryland, or other states where it would still be allowed.

Those statistics are mostly not of convicted rapists, but of uncharged claims.  Most involve couples as opposed to strangers.  I can't imagine many rapists would be willing to admit to rape in order to take the DNA test necessary to obtain parental rights.  It is odd that any stranger rapist would even know of a victim's pregnancy.  It is a strange case indeed, but not that much stranger than enduring the pregnancy and birthing the child from a rape.

In several states, rapists are still given parental rights and even use the threat of pressing for parental rights as leverage against victims.  "I won't sue for custody if you drop the charges."

Aside from the rest of this hot mess of a story this pissed me off more.

Because you can't swing a dead cow around in Nebraska without hitting a girl named Noemi. Way to keep your source's anonymity CNN, never change.

I don't agree with the word "couples" when talking about the statistic of rape-related pregnancies that occur. It is true that women are more likely to be raped by someone they know, and this does include boyfriends and husbands. But at the time of the rape from a supposed loved one, a significant amount of the women were trying to extricate themselves from the (often abusive) relationship. I'm sure they don't see themselves as being a "couple" with the man who raped them. It may seem like semantics, but not to the victims of the rapes who end up pregnant.

I had a very close friend who was devastated to learn in her 20's that she was a product of rape. Her mother and father, although married were estranged. Because of her father's actions, there were two victims of that rape instead of one.
